In case you were wondering how the U.S. military brainwashes its soldiers, here’s a highlight from the new Zogby poll of U.S. troops in Iraq:
While 85% said the U.S. mission is mainly "to retaliate for Saddam's role in the 9-11 attacks," 77% said they also believe the main or a major reason for the war was "to stop Saddam from protecting al Qaeda in Iraq."
Now many American civilians used to think that Saddam was behind 9/11, too. Some still do. But the Bush brainwashing of Americans is starting to fade as reality sinks in. Not so with the troops, though.
You can read the whole Zogby report here.

That is because they are censoring their access to the internet, email etc. so even if they want to know more they can't get any info.
see Wonkette today for email from troops.

I'm not a polling professional, but have enough experience with surveys to be confident that an answer supplied by 85% of respondents is one of multiple choices supplied by the survey, not a free-form answer by the respondents. Therefore the Zogby survey supplied an answer containing a huge lie. Was the intention to make U.S. troops appear twice as brainwashed as American civilians? Even Fox isn't pushing the 'Saddam-9/11' link anymore, and survey numbers showing that kind of thinking are down in the high thirties now (finally).
This survey is deeply flawed, to put it mildly. I've opposed this war actively since March 2002, and believe that we need to withdraw troops immediately. However convenient I might find the opinions of the troops in this survey wrt withdrawal, intellectual honesty forces me to view the survey as a deeply flawed, badly designed piece of propaganda.
