So it looks like it will be announced this afternoon that the Pentagon's inspector general will launch an investigation into the activities of one Douglas Feith. Feith, as we know, was the inside ringleader for the neoconservative cabal during the run-up to the war in Iraq. He created the Counterterrorism Evaluation Group (CTEG) and the Office of Special Plans (OSP), the Orwellian-named successor to the CTEG. As I documented extensively here and here, Feith's Pentagon shop was the principal Lie Factory for bogus intelligence on Iraq's supposed ties to Al Qaeda and on Iraq's WMD programs.
Pentagon sources say that Acting Inspector General Tom Gimble will announce this afternoon the scope of the inquiry into Feith and Co. His action comes in response to two letters, one from Senator Carl Levin (D.-Mich.), sent on Sept. 22, and one from Senator Pat Roberts (R.-Kan.), sent Sept. 9. Roberts, of course, chairs the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI). Gimble, who took over as Pentagon I.G. only in September, is the former Deputy Inspector General for Intelligence, who served as the Principal Advisor to the IG and the DoD on all matters relating to DoD-wide intelligence programs and operations, according to DOD. He's a civilian with no apparent ties to the cabal himself--so it's likely that he will apply the typical flinty-eyed look at Feith that we usually associate with an I.G.'s work.
This comes in the context of the Bush administration's continuing free-fall on Iraq. Bit by bit, Congress is turning against him, and the SSCI will conduct its own Phase II inquiry into pre-war intelligence manipulation by the Bush people--an inquiry that can't help but look into the Feith-based intelligence system. Bush is scrambling around Asia sounding like Richard I-am-not-a-crook Nixon, saying, "I didn't lie! I didn't lie!" In my humble opinion, as I've told all my friends, Bush in fact didn't lie, simply because he is Too Stupid To Lie. He just read the scripts handed to him by the VP and by Feith. After all, this is the president who said, in June 2003, "We found the WMD." No doubt he will be as surprised as anyone when he finds out that Dick and Dougie made all that stuff up.

Robert:
I have posted a link to "The Lie Factory" dozens and dozens of times, on numerous websites and in many emails -- including letters sent to all the Dems on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Read earlier tonight Billmon's, The Salvadoran Option II, and Scott Horton's, Nuremberg at Sixty: Is Jackson's Poisoned Chalice Now at Bush's Lips?
Horton is hedging that the Nuremberg Principles are as "robust as ever;" that, in time, international law will prevail; and "a number of key Bush officials are more likely to be the Pinochets of the next generation – blocked from international travel and forever fending off extradition warrants and prosecutor’s questions."
Do you agree?

I am a 53 year old soccer mom and have been writing, calling representatives, media outlets including The Diane Rehm show, Talk of the Nation, C-span etc. for almost three years
Demanding that the OFFICE OF SPECIAL PLANS , THE WHITE HOUSE IRAQ GROUP AND THE COUNTERROISM EVALUATION GROUP (which were all off limits to Phase I of the Senate Select Committee on INtelligence be thoroughly investigated. And that all involved with creating and dessiminating the false intelligence about WMD's be held accountable.
We finally have the promised Phase II of the SSCI being implemented. Although Phase II has fallen off the MSM's radar yet again...
We also have the inspector general of the Pentagon trying to determine whether the OSP conducted unauthorized unlawful or inappropriate intelligence activities.
Why has this taken so long? I mean our congress jumped right on investigating a President lying about an extra- marital affair, spent millions of dollars and a great deal of time getting to the bottom of a blow job. Is it too much to ask our representatives to get to the bottom of every ounce of fabricated intelligence and all of those who created and dessiminated this false intelligence. Why has this taken them so long? Is investigating a blow job critical to our national security? Did lying about that extra-marital affair cost tens of thousands of lives?
I think the delay of these investigations tell us a great deal about the state of mind of our congress. That they found it more important to find out every detail of the cigar incident from Monica Lewinsky and Clinton than WHO IN THE HELL CAME UP WITH ALL OF THE FALSE INTELLIGENCE AND WHY AND HOW DID IT GET FED INTO THE WHITE HOUSE?
I read about all three of these offices several years ago on Justin Raimando's site at anti-war.com and from Julian Borger at the Guardian etc. etc.
What the hell is wrong with this Republican controlled congress that they were more intrigued with a BLOW JOB THAN A INTELLIGENCE SNOW JOB that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths.
This is a message for our representatives get to the bottom of this false intelligence. Hold all of the people responsible for the fabrications accountable. Buck up..quit stalling.....This is not going away.
This is the very least you can do for the people who have lost their lives due to the use of this false intelligence and for the family members left behind.
The public needs to stay on our representatives or it will be a few more years when they confirm what we all ready know...the american public and the world were lied to about WMD's.
CONGRESS DO YOUR JOB AND HOLD THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE LIES ACCOUNTABLE.
